What is Stevia?

Stevia is a remarkable non-caloric herb that is native to Paraguay. It has been used as a flavour enhancer and sweetener for several centuries. However, tevia has received limited approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until recently. Since the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), Stevia can be sold legally in the United States, but only as a "dietary supplement". Approval for multiple uses is expected in the U.S. while Stevia has recieved considerable acceptance and use for decades in many other countries (notably in Japan).

If you have ever tasted Stevia, you will know that it is extremely sweet. In fact, its extracts have up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. Stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives. Medical research has also shown possible benefits of Stevia in treating obesity and high blood pressure. Due to the fact that Stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose, it is attractive as a natural sweetener to people on carbohydrate-controlled diets. Stevia is widely used as a sweetener in Japan and is now available in Canada as a dietary supplement.
